Hi-Caption™ DS2 Delivers Enhanced Digital Media Accessibility and Usability

Latest Edition of Hi-Caption provides an enhanced user interface, and native support for captioning of Windows Mediaplayer, Realplayer, QuickTime, and Macromedia Flash MX 2004

Concord, NH —July 12, 2004-HiSoftware, Inc. today announced the release of Hi-Caption DS2, a digital media suite, which provides accessibility testers worldwide with a comprehensive solution for managing captioning of their multimedia projects, and the accessibility of their Flash presentations, in complete conformance with standards mandated by Section 508 of the federal government's Rehabilitation Act, as well as the international accessibility guidelines set forth by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The latest release of Hi-Caption integrates native support for accessibility test, repair and captioning of Macromedia Flash MX 2004, with captioning support for Windows Media Player, Real One Player and QuickTime Player presentations. In addition, the new solution uses advanced engineering to provide an adjustable workspace and a new interface with enhanced usability features.

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act Amendments mandates that federal agencies ensure that all electronic and information technologies purchased, maintained or developed meet the accessibility standards established by the U.S. Access Board. Although federally mandated, state governments and private organizations can also benefit by adhering to these standards, which enable access and usability by the widest possible audience.

In order for multimedia to be accessible under Section 508 Rule (b) and W3C WCAG 1.0 Priority 1 checkpoint 1.4, developers must create synchronized captioning with media files. Hi-Caption allows for fast efficient creation, editing, and testing of the captioning of Multimedia. The captioning file is stored in a SAMI, SMIL or XML file. This file is very similar to HTML, but is a different language. Just as you would rather use a Web editor to create Web files, this program allows you to easily create the formatted captioning file, without having to learn the code behind it. The software also supports captioning multimedia files in multiple languages so that the audience may select and view captioning in the language of their choice.

Hi-Caption DS2 provides users with the ability to create, test and mange captioning for their Windows Media, RealOne Player, and QuickTime productions. It also integrates the ability to test, remediate and caption Flash MX 2004 presentations directly within the Flash authoring tool. “The Hi-Caption DS2 Digital Media Studio provides multimedia developers with an expanded tool chest to assist them with the creation of presentations that will be fully available to end-users regardless of technical or physical abilities,” according to Robert B. Yonaitis, CEO and President of HiSoftware Company. “Hi-Caption DS2 provides an enhanced user interface and bundles/integrates features and components previously only available separately, increasing the ease with which multimedia teams can quickly and efficiently work alone or in collaboration to provide full captioning for their Web projects. We believe that their efforts will significantly improve the quality of the web for all."
